                  <h5 class=\"\">Whales<\/h5>\n                  <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n                <div data-colibri-id=\"203-c14\" class=\"h-text h-text-component style-471 style-local-203-c14 position-relative h-element\">\n                  <!---->\n                  <!---->\n                  <div class=\"\">\n                    <p>Unlike humpback whales, which visit Mauritius from June to October to mate and give birth to offspring, Mauritius is one of the few places in the world where there is a permanent population of sperm whales not far from the shore. Sperm\n                      whales are the largest toothed whales and the species is listed as &#8216;vulnerable&#8217; by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature&#8217;s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The global sperm whale population has been growing\n                      very slowly, at around 1% per year, since the ban of whaling in 1986.&nbsp;<\/p>\n                    <p>The Mauritius population numbers only a few dozen, making it even more vulnerable and in need of protection. The MMCO is conducting long-term scientific research and monitoring of our sperm whale population (To know more about MAUBYDICK\n                      Mission (active link to Research Projects).<\/p>\n                    <p>Cetaceans are exposed to a variety of threats and stressors, mostly related to human activity.
